Dr. Arran Davis is a researcher in psychology, anthropology, and public health, working in the fields of global mental health and implementation science; originally from Minnesota in the United States, he completed his DPhil in Anthropology at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on how our social worlds – feelings of social connection and belonging, and the relationships and communities that sustain them – shape how our bodies work on a daily basis, and the effects this has on our mental and physical health. Arran's work has shown that social connection can reduce fatigue and increase physical activity levels, and that collaborative, interdependent forms of physical activity can help build the social connections that support good health. He uses interviews, experiments, and large-scale public health datasets to understand these patterns across cultures and socioeconomic groups. Arran’s current research examines how sociality and physical activity can be used to support positive mental health outcomes in low-resource settings across the globe. Movement and exercise have always been part of Arran's life and have shaped his research interests: Arran was a javelin thrower for the Oxford University Blues Athletics team and as an undergraduate for South Dakota State University, where he was named an NCAA Division I Track & Field Academic All-American.
