Research on higher education has a long tradition in the fields of psychology, education sciences, and economics. Today, with the growing demands of the knowledge society on higher education institutions research, for one, and the safeguarding of the autonomy of the universities, for another, higher education research is developing into a very dynamic research area. Through conducting empirical studies, higher education research is devoted to supporting the universities in achieving a better understanding of the conditions of university tasks in research, teaching, and administration and in taking an active role in shaping those conditions in the sense of quality management.
